Behind the scenes of Madagascar
When beginning work on the new animated film "Madagascar," the large and impressive team of creative people at Dreamworks ran into a conundrum. They found they had to use every modern technological advance available to them in order to produce a cartoon that had an old-fashioned look.
Production designer Kendal Cronkhite says, "we decided early on that we wanted to make a real cartoon, less photorealistic and a more Chuck Jones or Tex Avery style of animation. If we'd designed a very realistic-looking lion and then stretched him and shrunk him to get this zippy cartoon, it'd feel like the bones were breaking."
In "Madagascar," four animals, a zebra (voiced by Chris Rock), a lion (voiced by Ben Stiller), a hippo (voiced by Jada Pinkett Smith) and a giraffe (voiced by David Schwimmer) escape from the Manhattan zoo and wind up unexpectedly in Africa, where they must adapt to their new surroundings.
