Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes took their traveling party to Miami, Fla., this weekend.

The engaged pair, who spent Thursday dining, shopping and ice-skating in New York City to celebrate Holmes turning 27 on Dec. 18, arrived in Miami on Friday afternoon. Also in town: Will Smith (in the city to perform at the Y 100.7 Jingle Ball on Saturday) and wife Jada Pinkett Smith, Cruise's costar in the 2004 movie Collateral.

Early Friday evening, sources say, Cruise watched Will Smith rehearse at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Fla.; later, Cruise, Holmes and the Smiths dined at Miami Beach eatery Barton G. The Restaurant.

At about 1:20 a.m., the two couples hit the South Beach rock club Snatch, where they chilled for nearly an hour in a roped-off area on the second floor. (Also partying at Snatch was baseball slugger Sammy Sosa.) Holmes, who is expecting her first child with Cruise, kept her arms around her fiancé, even hugging him from behind as they all left through a back door. (The next night, says a source, when a well-wisher asked why Holmes hadn't ridden the club's mechanical bull, Cruise joked, "If she wasn't pregnant, she would have been on the bull.")

On Saturday, the four friends spent the afternoon on a private yacht touring the bay off the Florida coast, and stopped for lunch on the exclusive Fisher Island. Later, Cruise and Holmes headed to the BankAtlantic Center for the Jingle Ball. As they hung out backstage waiting for Will Smith's performance, they took photos with all who asked.

Finally, Smith took the stage, arriving via a sleigh that "flew" over the audience on wires. After two songs, he brought out his wife and their daughter Willow, 5, as well as Cheryl Romero, whom he described as a woman "who had a tough time this year." He handed her several gifts, then said, "I have another Christmas present for you and the audience. I want to bring out someone who has never been to Miami before: Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes."

As the crowd exploded in applause, the couple walked out hand in hand. "How's it going?" Cruise asked the audience. "This is my first time in Miami and I love it. Is it always like this?" Smith replied, "It is every time I come here."

"Then I can see why you keep coming back," Cruise said. Before he and Holmes left the stage, he added, "I'd like to wish you all a happy holiday and Merry Christmas and just a great year."

Jada & Will Smith Donate $75,000 to Youth Build!

San Francisco Chronicle
LEAH GARCHIK
Friday, December 16, 2005

The best times are always in the kitchen, and that was my own favorite moment at Glide Memorial's huge Mo's Kitchen Holiday Festival at the Marriott on Wednesday. Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, who'd been in town this fall for the shooting of "Pursuit of Happyness,'' which will star both Will and the couple's son Jaden, were special guests at the event. Upstairs during the cocktail reception, they were surrounded by TV cameras, bodyguards, PR people and aides who were trying to protect them from swarms of enthusiastic fans. There were more than 1,000 people at the event.

But then it was time to go down to dinner, and I got a chance to talk with Smith while he was led through the service elevator and through the kitchen to the banquet hall. Fruits of the conversation: The Smiths have been giving to Glide through their foundation. The movie was shot on Sundays, making it impossible for him to attend services at Glide. But one Sunday, Smith's birthday, the Rev. Cecil Williams "brought the service to me'' on the set, the choir singing in the street. The Smiths' 5-year-old daughter, Willow, insisted on going to Chinatown every day. Smith grew a full Afro and big mustache for the shoot, and shaved it off the "second they said 'Wrap!' ''

But the obvious fruits were less memorable than the scene as he walked through the kitchen. Actor Smith said later that the most important movie he'd ever made was "Ali,'' and that "Pursuit,'' about Chris Gardner, who once stood in line for meals at Glide and nowadays is the head of a major Chicago brokerage firm, is second. The workers in the kitchen seemed to sense his sentiments; they stood on both sides of him, in a kind of ragged receiving line four or five deep, as he walked through, giving him thumbs-up signs, catching his eye, doing subtle little dance moves. No one tried to engage him in conversation, but the attention of every person there was focused on him, and although he'd been protected from the mob at the cocktail party, here he focused on the workers and responded, catching and returning glances as he could, breaking into a phrase of song at one point, saying "I see you'' and "thanks.'' His conversations along that path trumped any journalist's question I could have asked, and it was euphoric to trail along in his parade.

After dinner and near the end of the presentations -- singing by the Glide choir and Oakland's "American Idol'' star LaToya London, and talks by Willie Brown and Williams and Janice Mirikitani, enthusiastically presided over by emcee Renel of KISS FM -- the Smiths took the stage. The honorees of the evening were restaurateur Man Kim, who'd helped rebuild Glide's kitchen; Irene Scully, who'd supported children's programs; and Glide YouthBuild, which prepares young people to serve in construction trades while completing their education.

You could see the YouthBuild kids, snappy in matching brown overalls that looked spanking new, focusing on the movie stars. When the Smiths stepped up to the podium, he joked around for a while, and then Jada Pinkett Smith (without bling and without cleavage, looking respectful and un-Hollywood) took over. "We always have obstacles,'' she said, looking at the kids. "I am the daughter of a mother who was a heroin addict and a father who is still struggling with crack addiction today. ... No matter what is happening in your life, you are here for a reason. You have the power to do anything in this world. Understand that the best weapon is your mind. Educate yourself. I don't care how pretty you are or how well you can sing, you've got to have your mind. So tonight, Will and I will make a donation to YouthBuild.'' They gave $75,000; Gardner, who was at dinner, too, pledged another $25,000 to make it an even $100,000.

The choir took the stage again, and Williams led a rocking version of "We Shall Overcome,'' guests abandoning their tables to dance. Debbie, the super-efficient waitress at our table, cleared it with a smile on her face. Somehow, in a season of many banquets, there seemed little that was routine about this one.

Jada Drops Wisdom, By Aaron Alford

Jada drops wisdom
By: Aaron Alford

Jada Pinkett Smith's heavy metal band Wicked Wisdom played in Houston and Austin this past Saturday and Sunday, but not before Pinkett Smith talked to The Batt about the band's beginnings and how they smash the stereotypes of female rockers.

BATT: How did Wicked Wisdom come about?

JPS: About three and a half years ago, I wanted to start a band. And who doesn't, right? I met Pocket, and we had the same musical vision, but we've had lots of change-ups over the years. We're the only two to have been here all along.

BATT: I'm sure it's hard enough to prove yourself as a woman in metal, but on top of that, a black female singer?

JPS: I love it. I like defying stereotypes, be it what people expect a wife or a mother to be, or a Hollywood celebrity or what a black woman is. I want to defy all stereotypes that define us. I love getting out there and showing the audience a different side of me and ultimately saying 'look, you can create your own reality;' because you can, and not a lot of people realize that.

BATT: I know they're two completely different animals, but which do you prefer: being onscreen or onstage?

JPS: OK, I have to be honest here. I love acting, don't get me wrong. I love it. But to have an instant exchange with the audience is so different. I get the opportunity to write my own story and present it to people. It's my freedom space; that's what I call it. That's why my stage name is Jada Koren; that's my middle name. I do that for everyone else, so it's easier for them to separate me from the other idea people have of me. I know that I embody someone else. So when I sign autographs 'Jada Koren,' kids are like, 'What is this?'

BATT: What singers did you mold yourself after?

JPS: Well, you have to understand that my generation was the MTV generation. It all started during those years. "Yo! MTV Raps" was only on once a week, so all I saw was metal. Quiet Riot, Poison, Guns 'N Roses and going to performing arts school exposed me to all that.

BATT: What does your hubby Will Smith think?

JPS: He loves it. He loves that I had the courage to take this route. He was at Ozzfest with us and was so inspired. He's now trying to work on this new musical concept for himself that has no boundaries, and that came from being out there with us and seeing the fans.

BATT: Any fears of hearing loss with all the recent studies of musicians going deaf from long periods of high volume?

JPS: Oh, yeah. I've taken a lot of abuse. I've lost quite a bit of hearing in my right ear. Between being in this band and being in the studio with Will and in the car; Will likes driving with his music so loud! But I was just saying to myself last night that I had my ear monitors up to eight all night. I cannot keep doing that. I'll have to talk to my doctor soon.

BATT: So at the end of your career, or 50 years from now, would you rather be known as Hollywood blockbuster actress Jada Pinkett Smith, or Jada Koren, the badass metal singer?

JPS: How about Jada Koren Pinkett Smith? I would hope that when I'm gone people would remember the totality. Society tries to put us into compartments, and what's important to remember is that you can create your own reality, because you really can.

Jada Pinkett Smith finds her hard rock voice

Dec. 2, 2005, 12:21AM
Jada Pinkett Smith finds her hard rock voice

By MICHAEL D. CLARK
Copyright 2005 Houston Chronicle

On screen Jada Pinkett Smith has played a bank robber, a femme fatale and the wife of Muhammad Ali. It wasn't until she entered the Matrix, however, that she decided to be what she really wanted to be.
A hard-rock vocalist.
While shooting The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, the last two installments of the Matrix sci-fi trilogy, Pinkett Smith talked to co-star Keanu Reeves and got a handle on what to expect as she prepared to take her hard-rocking band Wicked Wisdom public.

Reeves had drawn a great deal of publicity, much of it bad, for his work as bass player in the rock band Dogstar.

"I talked to Keanu about it quite a bit," Pinkett Smith says. "He said, 'They (metal fans) will jump all over you because of who you are.'

"But I can take a blow. I'm a soldier."

Pinkett Smith, who goes by the name Jada Koren (her middle name) as the lead growler for Wicked Wisdom, will have her chance to win over Houston headbangers Saturday when the band plays with Powerman 5000 at Scout Bar.

Many will snicker or sneer at the thought of the actress and wife of superstar actor/rapper Will Smith letting her hair down and howling like Rob Zombie or Ozzy Osbourne. When Wicked Wisdom joined the Ozzfest lineup earlier this year, many of the established heavy-rock artists raised a pierced eyebrow. They also figured Wicked Wisdom wouldn't make it through the entire tour.

"On the last day of the tour a lot of the guys fessed up that they figured I would be off the tour in two weeks," Pinkett Smith says. "Both artists and fans came into the tour with their own ideas about who I was as an individual and left saying, 'If she can do that, there's no telling what she can do.' "

Pinkett Smith concedes that her well-financed marriage has afforded her the opportunity to take time away from acting and pursue her dream of performing music live.

"It doesn't hurt to have Will Smith as your husband," she says. "You don't have to worry about paying the bills."

Though she might seem a musical novice on paper, Pinkett Smith attended the Baltimore School for the Arts, where she gained an appreciation for music across the pop-culture spectrum. Unlike her West Philadelphia-raised husband, who was drawn to hip-hop, Pinkett Smith lists classic rockers such as Joan Jett, Pat Benatar, Led Zeppelin and Osbourne as her major influences.

The original Wicked Wisdom lineup tried bending Pinkett Smith toward dance-pop R&B like Janet Jackson. Gradually members left, and she and guitarist Pocket, a veteran musician who has played alongside Erykah Badu and Eric Benet, started getting more musically aggressive until the hard-rock sound of the group's self-titled album (in stores Feb. 21) came to fruition.

Pocket says there was a moment during rehearsals when Pinkett Smith locked her mix of growls, midrange throw-downs and hiccupping singing pipes together; he knew immediately Wicked Wisdom had found its voice.

"I stopped her and said, 'That's exactly what I'm looking for. That's your starting point,' " Pocket recalls. "I knew then that we had 'it' and that this was not a one-time shot in the dark."

Pinkett Smith agrees. She knows that numerous actors — Reeves, Russell Crowe, Juliette Lewis — have gotten grief for moonlighting as rock stars. She's adamant, however, that fronting a band like Wicked Wisdom is what she was born to do. She plans to stick with it and win over the naysayers one club at a time.

"You can't enjoy the glory on the other side without having to pay," Pinkett Smith says. "I don't think I've ever had to earn my stripes like I did on Ozzfest. The crowd made me work. They don't (care) about the rah-rah Hollywood (stuff). It's given me a chance to be just Jada and not Jada Pinkett Smith."
