Wicked Widom Lets Her 'Get Down And Dirty'

Jada Pinkett Smith in metal band

Wicked Wisdom lets her 'get down and dirty'

By STEVE TILLEY - Toronto Sun

It's not easy being a movie star who also plays in a rock band. Just ask Keanu Reeves.

So Jada Pinkett Smith did exactly that, when she decided to moonlight from acting and try the whole raunchy rock goddess thang, fronting a band called Wicked Wisdom.

Jada Koren, (Jada Pinkett Smith)

"Keanu really helped me get an understanding of what I was doing, and what was going on," the actress turned metal queen said of her Matrix movies co-star, who plays bass in the not exactly acclaimed rock act Dogstar.

Raunchy? Metal? Yes, we're talking about that Jada Pinkett Smith. Married to some dude named Will, starred in Collateral and Ali and The Nutty Professor, looks like she'd weigh about 100 pounds soaking wet.

But when the guitar-and-drum-heavy band takes the stage at the Phoenix on Monday, opening for Atlanta groove-metal meisters Sevendust, the 5-foot-nothing Pinkett Smith will growl about darkness and death and breaking some mother-you-know-what-er's neck. Um, is this the same nice lady who voiced Gloria the hippo in Madagascar?

"It gives me an opportunity to express that other side of myself," Pinkett Smith said in a phone interview from Florida, where the band was playing a string of small club dates this week.

"I can give you the cute red-carpet flair, but there's also another side of me that likes to get down and dirty. That's the side I prefer, actually."

Many a Hollywood star has dabbled in the music game, but for every J.Lo there's a Russell Crowe, a Bruce Willis or a -- no offence to your pal, Jada -- Keanu Reeves.

"He was the first person to tell me, 'Jada, this is going to be rough. People already see you one way, and it's going to be very difficult to break that. Just know now you're going to be up for a lot of criticism.' "

Here's the thing, though. Her band Wicked Wisdom isn't bad, not bad at all. Pinkett Smith has the pipes and the presence, and the talented group is anchored by drummer and original Fishbone founding member Philip "Fish" Fisher.

Philip "Fish" Fisher

"It's not a hobby for her, I'm not a hobby musician," Fisher said. "It's not about the Hollywood actress at all. What would a Hollywood actress be doing playing such underground music?"

Good question, actually. Wicked Wisdom cycled through sounds and lineups for nearly four years before arriving at the raw but melodious flavour of metal they're playing today. Veterans of last summer's Ozzfest tour (after Sharon Osbourne extended a personal invitation to perform), they're poised to release their first CD next month.

But where does Will Smith figure in this equation? According to some gossip mags, the Fresh Prince is scaling back on movie work so his princess can be a rock star.

Or not. "He's not scaling back jack!" Pinkett Smith said. "There are all these little tabloids all over the place talking about how Will Smith is putting his career on hold so his wife can pursue her music career."

Pinkett Smith says her husband is just taking a short break while getting a couple of other projects off the ground. But he also makes time to visit his wife while she's on tour, in part to check out the band, and in part to make sure nobody's checking her out. "If you leave your wife on the road for too long -- well, hey!" she said. "He keeps an eye on me and makes sure I'm doing what I'm supposed to be doing."

From Gabrielle, posted on:

I went to the Sevendust concert mainly to see Nonpoint and Sevendust. In fact, when I bought the tickets, I didn't even care about the opening acts, let alone, know who they were. I sat in the Tabernacle upstairs and drank a few as I listened to ONE (they were okay). But then..., this kick ass-female lead singer took the stage and got my attention immediately! I loved it! They were a fuse of metal and funk. The crowd was riveted! Being a female, I was most impressed with the tiny ball of fire lead singer. Immediately following their performance, I left my seat to find out the name of the band, and purchase a CD. I quickly found out their name was Wicked Wisdom..., however, and to my dismay, their CD wasn't out in the stores yet. Patience is a virture, so I figured I could wait..., and went back to my seat (after a couple more purchases of an alchoholic beverage). Sadly, the next opening band couldn't even start to compare to Wicked Wisdom, and the audience in the wings and on the floor knew it! I almost felt sorry for the lead singer as he lost the once electric audience. Of course, Nonpoint and Sevendust rocked the house. Afterward, my friends and I joined the other picture and autograph seeking fans outside of the venue near the buses. I had already met many of the members of Nonpoint and Sevendust. I wanted to meet the lead singer of Wicked Wisdom. I figured, it was all in vain, considering they were an opening band. Just as I was considering leaving, I noticed a tiny, nymph-like woman dressed in black coming toward the group of fans and something triggered in my memory banks...., she looked soooo familiar. Being 5'8", I towered over the small lead singer of Wicked Wisdom. She smiled at me, I asked for her autograph and she gladly obliged. I thanked her and she thanked me for being a fan. I glanced at my ticket stub at her signature and it all became clear. It was Jada! I was at once dumbfounded. No, it couldn't be the hippo in Madagascar..., the college student in a long gone Different World. This morning, as soon as I woke, I ate some toast and ventured to my computer...., sure enough, Wicked Wisdom is fronted by Jada (Koren) Smith! Not only am I impressed with the band, but I'm also full of great respect for a great woman. I say, more power to her, and I wish her great success in her music career. I predict her band's new album will be a success and many ppl will learn to respect and admire her as I do now for her guts and her voice!

Metal Queen: Jada Pinkett Smith Gone Wild

By BRAD WHEELER

Wednesday, January 25, 2006

Actors turning as musicians is no new game. Billy Bob Thornton did it, Keanu Reeves did it, and Russell Crowe did it too. There's Bruce Willis, Dennis Quad, Johnny Depp and even Milla Jovovich. All earned snickers and sneers for their mid-career vanity projects.

Most recently Juliette Lewis has earned a few favourable reviews with her alternative-rock band Juliette and the Licks. Still, her onstage Iggy Pop routine is a bit of shtick.

And then there is Jada Pinkett Smith, the pint-sized wife of the very rich and jug-eared actor Will Smith. With her, judging from a severe performance at Toronto's Phoenix Concert Theatre on Monday, it doesn't seem to be such a sideline lark.

There she was fronting the Wicked Wisdom, an otherwise all-male group of menace-rockers. Smith takes pains to present the band as a collective, but make no mistake, the actress-singer-wife commanded the attention. In fact, the audience of young men -- few nancy-boys among them -- were slightly taken aback by the sight of her.

Smith's hair was poofed out, and her eyes bulged like Jack (The Shining) Nicholson. A black muscle shirt revealed formidable triceps, which were taut like the rest of her. She did the devil-horn thing with her fingers, and her demonic tongue-waving would trouble even Linda Blair. Here could be the distressed, bastard hate-child of Henry Rollins and Diana Ross, I kid you not.
But then, after the show, Smith is back to a more composed state. "You leave it all on the stage," she says, sipping from a little plastic bottle of water. "That's the great part of doing it. You can put it 'wooh,' got that off my chest. Keeps you sane."

Smith relaxes post-show on a tour bus, surrounded by bandmates who say they afford her no special status. "Ain't no adjustments," the guitarist says emphatically, "There's no exceptions." Smith, who travels in her own bus, is thought to be "one of the fellas."

Wicked Wisdom appears on The David Letterman Show tonight, and releases its self-titled debut album in February. Things looks good, but the band and Smith have had rocky moments, particularly on last summer's Ozzfest concerts. Hardcore fans of the heavy-metal tour thought the band hadn't earned the promotion in rank.

"Before people heard the music, and they heard we were going on Ozzfest, it was fiery," Smith explained. "But once we got out there, we really turned a lot of people around."
